Care Instructions
Keeping Your Heirloom Pieces Beautiful for Generations
Your handcrafted cutting board, charcuterie board, or wooden utensil is built to last a lifetime—but like any natural material, wood needs proper care to maintain its beauty and durability. Without regular cleaning and oiling, even the finest boards will eventually dry out, crack, and lose their luster. Follow these simple care instructions to protect your investment and keep your pieces looking as stunning as the day they left our workshop.
Daily Care & Cleaning
After Each Use:
-
Wash your board with warm water and a mild dish soap using a soft sponge or cloth
- Avoid soaking the board in water or leaving it submerged in the sink
- Never put wooden boards or utensils in the dishwasher—the high heat and prolonged moisture exposure will cause warping, cracking, and finish damage
- Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue
- Dry immediately with a clean towel, wiping in the direction of the grain
- Stand the board upright or lay it flat to air dry completely—never store it while damp

For Stubborn Stains or Odors:
- Sprinkle coarse salt on the surface and scrub with half a lemon
- Let sit for 5-10 minutes, then rinse and dry thoroughly
- For persistent odors, make a paste of baking soda and water, apply, let sit, then rinse
Monthly Oiling: The Key to Longevity
Wood is a living material that naturally loses moisture over time. Regular oiling replenishes that moisture, prevents cracking, enhances the grain, and creates a protective barrier against stains and bacteria.
How Often to Oil:
- New boards: Oil once a week for the first month
- Regular use: Oil once a month
- Infrequent use: Oil every 2-3 months
- When the wood looks dry or feels rough: Oil immediately

How to Oil Your Board:
- Start with a clean, completely dry board. Make sure there’s no moisture or food residue.
- Apply food-safe mineral oil generously. Pour a small amount (1-2 tablespoons for a standard cutting board) directly onto the surface. Our Silverhill Mill mineral oil is specially formulated for wood care and made in-house for optimal results.
- Spread the oil evenly. Use a clean, soft cloth or paper towel to rub the oil into the wood, working in the direction of the grain. Don’t forget the edges, bottom, and handle.
- Let it soak. Allow the oil to penetrate the wood for at least 4-6 hours, or ideally overnight.
- Wipe away excess. Use a clean cloth to buff away any oil that hasn’t absorbed. The surface should feel smooth, not greasy.
- Repeat if needed. If the wood still looks dry or dull after the first application, apply a second coat.
What Not to Do
❌ Never use vegetable oil, olive oil, or other cooking oils. These oils will go rancid and create unpleasant odors.
❌ Never put wooden boards in the dishwasher. High heat and prolonged water exposure will destroy the wood.
❌ Don’t leave boards soaking in water. This causes warping and cracking.
❌ Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Stick to mild dish soap and water.
❌ Don’t store boards in damp areas. Keep them in a dry, well-ventilated space.
❌ Never use your board as a trivet for hot pots and pans. Extreme heat can damage the finish and wood.
Signs Your Board Needs Attention
- Dry, dull appearance: Time to oil
- Rough texture: Needs oiling and possibly light sanding
- Water doesn’t bead on the surface: Oil barrier is gone—oil immediately
- Small cracks forming: Oil frequently and consider applying a thicker coat
